Letters to the Editor of the Daily News: VALLEY SCHOOLS SHOULD GO CHARTER + SUPPORTING L.A. SCHOOL SYSTEM

Valley schools should go charter
Re "Day of upheaval at LAUSD" (March 16):

It is horrific how the Los Angeles Unified School District is robbing my child of an education. Our local elementary school is losing five teachers next year. All the schools in the Valley need to become charter schools and break away from LAUSD. A solution would be to have everyone who plays the California Lottery pay a dollar a week for a month, collect $200million or so and re-hire the teachers. The money shouldn't get into the hands of LAUSD. Raising $200 million would hire 100 teachers back for four years, until something could be worked out.

Supporting L.A.'s school system
Re "Prized campus leaving LAUSD" (March 2):

Splitting Los Angeles Unified School District into hierarchies is becoming an appealing intrigue. This sort of coup d' tat is as old as history itself. Intellectual elites have always strived for supremacy and freedom from mediocrity. But public schools provide far more than academia. No other program or activity serves better to unite our people. Splintering our school systems serves to segregate our children into many self-serving fraternal advocacies. Whereas, public schools serve to blur the lines between races, ethnicities, social classes and the many levels of innate intelligence.
